May 2011 – Crossing Over Mix

Legendary Detroit guitarist, Dennis Coffey just released his self titled album from Strut Records. Coffey was a member of the original Motown Funk Brothers backing band and contributed his signature wah-wah guitar sound to Soul and R&B during the late 60’s. The new album is comprised of covers and original tunes bringing a wide range of guest vocalists including a cover of Parliament’s All Your Goodies Are Gone featuring Stone Throw’s Mayer Hawthorne. This track has been included in this month’s mix.

Wires – the lead single from Owiny Sigoma Band’s debut album, is also a part of the mix. The band is a collective effort of London and Kenyan musicians, and was released on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Recordings this spring. Be sure to read BBC’s review on how they came to work together.

April 2011 – Timeless Hope Mix

I would like to thank those who have given support and love to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami. Your help means a lot to Japan.

Over a month after the disastrous events, engineers are still fighting to maintain control over the stricken nuclear reactors. As I research more about nuclear plants and its industry, I learned just how many people are involved. It is a complex industry which involves everyone from politicians, reactor manufacturers to contractors. Despite the fact that it produces nuclear waste, many of us have chosen to be dependent on nuclear energy. Long lasting behavior of radioactive wastes can endure millions of years, and we are leaving such a burden on our children. We can no longer take risks that will result in polluting our planet. It’s not too late if we act now, so that generations to come can still have hope for their future.

Rising Sun Mix – March 2011

On March 11, 2011, the worst disaster in recent history hit my home country, Japan. Hundreds of thousands in northern Japan are suffering from the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami. People lost their homes, their towns and their loved ones in the wake of the destruction. The entire country is battling to help its shocked survivors and are struggling to restore itself, but there are overwhelming impediments. Shattered infrastructure delays their rescue efforts, and there is still not enough water, food, and medical supplies to go around.

We need your help.

To help those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, please donate to the following organizations.
Japan Society – Japan Earthquake Relief Fund
American Red Cross – Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami

Thanks for your support and love!

Although I feel helpless here in NYC, I am encouraged to see people are helping each other and staying strong in this difficult time. Yes, we will rise again.

Eastern Departure Mix – January 2011

The new year started off with a blast. Making my annual excursion to Tokyo, I was able to add Fukuoka and Shanghai into the trip this year – all within three weeks, needless to say it wasn’t enough.

While in Shanghai I had the chance to check out Beat Conductorz, a party thrown by a group producers and djs including ex-Brooklyner, Hamacide. Strictly for the heads, it’s one of the few parties of its kind.

Back in Tokyo, I visited a party called Jazztronica!! at The Room which is organized by Ryota Nozaki (Jazztronik) and Shuya Okino (Kyoto Jazz Massive). No need to explain this legendary club to most of you, but if you don’t know already, it is owned by Shuya Okino of Kyoto Jazz Massive. The energy at the event was unlike any other, it was staggering to witness first hand the exuberance from the crowd.

Better late than never, the January Mix is ready. Though it’s only been a month into 2011, the tracks in this month’s mix is full of incredible tunes indicating that this will be another great year. While in Tokyo, I got an exclusive promo from the multi talented, Eiichi Izumi. He is the man behind Minotaur, a fashion label based in Tokyo and Fukuoka, and also DJs for his monthly events in both cities. The single was produced under the name of E2 productions, which is a collaborative joint by Eiichi and Enrico Crivellaro of Italy’s Neroli label. I also included Waves of Love (Deeper Mix) from the same single into the mix. You can get your copy here, however, both the vinyl and CD are limited, so grab it before it sells out!
